Starting off first with the national picture as we head into Tuesday. Showers and storms continue across Western Australia as a trough moves through. But ahead of that trough, we are expecting very hot northerly winds to pour down across central and south Australia. Ahead of a cool change with showers and storms arriving from night.
Then for eastern Australia showers clearing away from north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland, but south-easterly winds keep pushing showers onto the Queensland Wet Tropics as well as the Top End. Then on Tuesday night, the next cold front approaches south-west WA.
That will bring a few showers as we head into Wednesday, but the rest of the country is looking mostly clear. So now, state-by-state look. Starting off with Queensland.
Showers in the south-east, they’ll push as far inland as Roma and Emerald. Maybe even the chance of a thunderstorm inland. Showers clear away from the south-east though from the afternoon and then push up into central parts of the state.
Showers also across Cape York Peninsula, but inland, though it is a different story, with hot winds pushing temperatures right up into the mid to high 30s, including for Birdsville and the Channel Country, which in a run of days in the high 30s.
Not quite that hot across the east coast though, we are expecting mild temperatures, particularly for Brisbane, 23 °C with slight chance of a shower during the morning. That will clear to a partly cloudy and dry day, but showers through the day up in Cairns with a maximum of 28 °C.
Now to New South Wales. Patchy morning fog about the Ranges. Maybe even some fog across southern elevated areas that will clear to a mostly sunny day.
Otherwise, you’re expecting a few showers across the north-east, which will clear away and contract away as we head into the afternoon. Onshore winds will keep it quite mild on the coast, reaching the low to mid 20s.
Clear for Sydney, 22 °C and partly cloudy conditions, and in Canberra a cold start, then a partly cloudy 21 °C to follow and inland up into the low 30s.
Now down to Victoria. Patchy morning fog across eastern parts of the state, but then northerly winds will push the temperatures right up into the low to mid, even high 20s in the south and the low 30s across the north of the state, where the Mallee will see temperatures up to 10 °C above average.
Northerly winds will freshen ahead of that trough, and we could even see a light shower across the far south-west of Victoria later in the day. For Melbourne mostly sunny, but a high cloud, though a warm top of 24 °C and a very warm, sunny and 32 °C for Mildura.
Now down to Tasmania, we are expecting patchy morning fog and frost that will clear to a partly cloudy day. Slight chance of a shower about the west and also to the south, and we may even see a few showers spilling over into central and eastern parts of the state during the day.
As a trough approaches though, northerly winds will strengthen and we will see further showers moving through overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday. But otherwise it will be a mild Tuesday 21 °C, partly cloudy for Hobart and reaching the mid to high teens across the northern part of the state.
Now to South Australia. It will be a very warm to hot day, with maximum temperatures up to 12 °C to 14 °C above average for this time of year. Many places will see their warmest day since late summer or autumn.
We’ll see a cooler change moving through with a trough from the afternoon and showers and storms to follow. By midnight, they’ll make it as far east as Ceduna, maybe even down towards Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island.
But Adelaide though a warm day, 32 °C, with showers coming through on Wednesday and reaching the high 30s across northern parts of South Australia.
To Western Australia now, showers and storms continue across the east. That’ll extend all the way back into the Gascoyne. A few showers also along the south coast and the south-west. They’ll pick up during the day as a cold front approaches.
Otherwise, looking at a mild to warm day, back to temperatures pretty close to average for this time of year. Perth 20 °C and making it the coolest capital city in the country on Tuesday, with a few showers there and then reaching the mid to high 20s and low 30s across northern parts of WA.
Finally for northern Australia. Showers across the western Top End, they’ll clear away during the morning and then showers will pick up across the eastern Top End and around the Gulf as well during the day.
Very hot inland, reaching the mid 30s and then further across into WA, we’ll see showers and storms for the Pilbara and also through the north interior.
For Darwin possible morning shower, but then a dry day to follow with a top of 34 °C and reaching the mid to high 30s across the Kimberley. That’s your forecast for today.
