For most of the country, high pressure means that it’s more fine, settled and clear weather. It’s this high here near southern Western Australia which is the main weather system for at least 80 or 90% of the country.
However, we see a shift down here in the south-east, particularly Tasmania. A succession of cold fronts and troughs crossing the southern state here, bringing some very wintry conditions across Tasmania and clipping parts of southern Victoria at times through Thursday as well.
Let’s fly around the states, starting in Queensland.
The coastal showers from earlier in the week are clearing on Thursday. That’s giving us dry, bright and mostly sunny weather almost statewide, with the exception of a few showers in the very far north of Cooktown.
For everyone else, temperatures are a little above average, including around Brisbane. A high of 24°C here. We’ve got 20°C in Toowoomba and 28°C in Longreach under sunny skies.
Much of New South Wales will also be seeing a fine day on Thursday. Plenty of clear skies and sunshine here.
It will be quite a cold morning and then a mild afternoon. A moderate westerly breeze affects most areas.
In terms of rainfall, we could see a couple of light showers around the South West Slopes, the Snowy Valleys and the Riverina.
The snow level will be about 900 m, so perhaps a flurry of snow for anyone higher than that, but the rain and snow totals will be low.
A brisk south-westerly wind across Victoria on Thursday is going to pepper southern areas with showers.
It might feel like a bit of a wet day, but we won’t see big amounts of rainfall accumulate, so there’s no concern about anything such as flooding.
That wind is really chilly.
Maximum temperatures in the 10°C to 12°C range for much of southern Victoria. We could see 13°C or 14°C further north, but a bit of wind chill will make it feel cool up there as well.
Elevated parts of the state could see a flurry or two of snowfall above about 800 m, but maybe only 1 or 2 cm of snow is expected.
It will be very wintry across Tasmania tomorrow.
Strong cold winds blowing up from the south-west. We’ve got some single-digit maximum temperatures and that doesn’t even account for the wind chill factor, so perhaps it’s feeling more like 4°C or 5°C outside.
With the cold conditions, the snow level will be quite low in Tasmania tomorrow.
We could see snow above 300 or 400 m, and that could potentially affect a couple of higher roads and passes tomorrow. So, if you are planning to travel across the state, definitely check that those roads are open.
When it comes to rainfall, we’ll see the majority of the wet weather through western parts. We could easily see 30 to 50 mm out there tomorrow.
Less rain in the north and the east, including Hobart, perhaps closer to 5 mm in those areas, but still feeling pretty wet, windy and wintry.
One more thing to throw in the mix: a Damaging Wind Warning will be in place for areas south of Hobart.
A much lighter southerly flow for South Australia will keep a bit of a cap on the temperatures.
We’re looking at temperatures in the lower half of the teens in southern areas and the upper teens for northern parts of the state.
The wind coming in off the sea will bring one or two light showers to coastal parts from Mount Gambier through Adelaide, out towards the Eyre Peninsula and the far west coast, but maybe only 1 or 2 mm of rainfall.
The weather that you’re experiencing on Wednesday in Western Australia is going to be very similar to what we see tomorrow.
Very little changes in the weather pattern.
That means another mostly bright and sunny day along the west coast, including Perth. A high of 18°C there.
Bright and sunny but a little breezy up around the Pilbara.
We’ll see a touch of cloud over the southern interior and the south coast, with one or two light showers possible down at sea level.
For Australia’s north, there could be a little bit of fog through some eastern parts of the Top End tomorrow morning.
That shouldn’t last all that long.
Maybe an afternoon shower around parts of Arnhem Land, including around Nhulunbuy.
For everyone else, it’s a fresh south-east wind, so a little bit breezy, a little bit gusty tomorrow.
The humidity is at the low end of the spectrum and the temperatures in many areas are 1°C or 2°C below average.
