National weather forecast: Rain spreads across the south-east

G’day from the bureau, David here to take a look at the weather around the country for tomorrow, where the main feature is this rain band that’s going to stretch from inland WA all the way down to Tasmania.

So plenty of rain and thunderstorms for large parts of South Australia in particular and Victoria tomorrow, as well as parts of Tassie and also western New South Wales further north and east.

This ridge of high pressure is really strong, dominating and keeping the weather really fine and settled right across the east coast for most of Queensland and New South Wales, and another ridge of high pressure comes into play through southern WA as well.

Really settling the weather down there after what’s been a pretty wet and stormy couple of weeks for large parts of Western Australia, and some showers coming into play across the Top End as well as we move more into the build-up season.

Now let’s take a look around the country, starting with Queensland where, as I said, that ridge of high pressure is really strong. Temperatures are pretty mild along the east coast with onshore wind, so partly cloudy. Top of 25 °C for Brisbane. Cairns a top of 27 °C. A couple of showers just around the north tropical coast from about Ingham north in the usual spots. 1 or 2 showers as well, perhaps around the Gulf Coast too, but dry and sunny weather for the rest of the Sunshine State really dominating the weather. That high pressure system, hotter temperatures out in the far west.

For New South Wales and the ACT, pretty hot start to October for much of the state. Temperatures in the mid 30s in the west and nudging 30 °C as well through parts of western Sydney, the city a top of 29 °C, Hunter Valley as well, nudging 30 °C too.

Canberra going for partly cloudy, top of 26 °C.

And then as you get down into south-western New South Wales, there’ll be cloud and some patchy rain around there, but totals won’t be too significant tomorrow.

For Victoria, patchy rain across much of the state to start with and then really thickening up through the day as that trough system comes into play. So large parts of the state, we’ll see 5 to 20 mm of rain with some higher totals from thunderstorms. So 5 to 20 mm for the Wimmera, the South-west, the central district and for much of Gippsland too. The rain totals drop off as it gets warmer and drier through the north and east of the state, but those areas will get more rain over the next couple of days, so fear not. For Melbourne, 22 °C the top tomorrow, 10 to 15 mm across most of the city, so that north-westerly rain shadow is not really in play tomorrow. So most of the city will be quite wet for large parts of the day. And some areas, particularly probably the south-east suburbs, could see some thunderstorms which will bump those totals up to 20 or even 30 mm of rain perhaps. So a wet day tomorrow for Melbourne and indoor day for school holiday activities.

Moving down to Tasmania now and we’ll see bands of showers and patchy rain just skating through in the north-westerly winds. So much of the west and the north will see showers on and off through the day. Dry in the south and east. Some showers, particularly around in the morning for Hobart, and then a mostly dry afternoon with a top of 21 °C, maybe some showers again in the evening for Hobart, and a similar story for most of the south and east. Just 1 or 2 showers, but mostly a dry day tomorrow.

Now for South Australia. Anywhere south of this trough line here, we’ll see rain and thunderstorms tomorrow. Again, many areas seeing 5 to 20 mm, with higher totals up to 30 mm or more possible in thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms are in the mix through the Mid North, the Flinders and parts of the Eyre Peninsula where heavy rain is a risk, with severe thunderstorms there and severe thunderstorms as well further north and west in the pastoral districts out there, particularly during the afternoon. Meanwhile, north of that trough line up in the north-west, north-east here, so you can see temperatures reaching the high 30s and a Fire Weather Warning is current. So hot, dry and windy conditions for north-eastern South Australia, polar opposite to most of the state, which will be cooler and quite wet. Adelaide showers on and off through the day, going for a top of 21 °C.

In Western Australia, it’s a more settled day than what we’ve seen in recent weeks. Just some showers along the south coast in the morning, but those clear out pretty quickly as a high pressure system comes in. Quite a chilly morning to start with for the southern inland. So a little bit of frost around perhaps, Perth then going for a mostly sunny top of 21 °C. Still some showers and thunderstorms through the eastern inland parts here. Those areas have seen multiple showers and storms over the last couple of weeks, but this is the most settled that the weather has looked in WA for a number of days now.

And for the Territory, lastly, to start with in the south, you can see those showers and thunderstorms down around, all around in the far south-west again, with severe thunderstorms possible down there. Not quite reaching Alice Springs tomorrow. Top of 35 °C and mostly dry. Across the Top End, you can see some showers around during various parts of the day, so getting really into the build-up season now. For Darwin, could see some showers in the overnight and early morning period on Thursday, with a Gulf line coming through from the east, then a mostly dry day with a top of 34 °C. Just 1 or 2 showers around the coast during the day, and then more showers coming across the Top End from the east again later in the day in the Northern Territory.
