National weather forecast: Rain surges through WA, fine elsewhere

Hello, I’m Angus here at the bureau. Today is Wednesday. This is the National Weather Forecast. We’re discussing Thursday’s weather. That’ll be the 27th of August. And for most of the country, settled and calm conditions. This high pressure region here through western New South Wales, really going to flex its muscle and swell out across the east, bringing mostly calm, settled and sunny conditions from Tasmania to Queensland and through our central states and territories too. Meanwhile, though, rain in the west, a lot of rain on Wednesday that will continue into Thursday, at least for some parts of the state.

Queensland will have a really settled, bright, mostly sunny day across the state. There’ll be a little bit of cloud from about Yeppoon down to the New South Wales border, and the slight chance of a shower around the Gold Coast, Coolangatta area. Everyone else should be dry and temperatures are a shade on the warm side of average for the time of year, as we head towards those spring-time months.

Could see an early shower for eastern New South Wales, particularly about or north of Newcastle. But there’s not much to that. The rainfall will be light and it will be clearing up as well, tending to a pretty bright second half of the day. A mixture of sunshine and cloud will persist across the east coast, and we head for highs of approximately 20 °C. Early cloud tending to a sunny day for inland parts of the state.

Bright, settled and sunny day across Victoria and honestly, not much more to say. The wind is really light tomorrow. The temperatures are mild. It will be quite cold in the morning before heating to a pleasant afternoon, and there’ll be some cloud lingering, but lots of sunshine as well.

And Tasmania could also have a cold morning. We see a few 1 °C temperatures on the map for the first part of the day, but we will head towards a settled and sunny day on Thursday, particularly through the afternoon. Into the evening, it could cloud over a touch and we might even see a late spot of rainfall moving on to the west and the south-west, but that won’t be coming through until after dark.

For South Australia, this high being in New South Wales means we get the wind on this way. So, coming down from the north across SA, that will bring us warm temperatures and sunny skies through the state. We’re approximately 20 °C through most southern areas, although that’s just 17 °C for Mount Gambier and 22s and 23s for the northern half of the state, with barely any cloud.

Now, lots of rain today as I’m filming, Wednesday, around this part of the coast here. Now, that’s pushing inland on Thursday. So, expect cloudy skies and scattered rain throughout the Wheatbelt, the Great Southern, the south coast, parts of the Goldfields as well. All of these interior areas likely to see some welcome rainfall tomorrow, towards the end of what’s been a pretty dry winter. Along the west coast, we will continue to see some showers and some cool southerly winds, that includes Perth Geraldton, in fact, could see showers all the way up to Carnarvon first thing in the day, but that will clear up in the afternoon.

And finally, to northern Australia. A few showers in and around Broome. Haven’t seen a lot of that in recent months. It’s a little bit of humidity and moisture across the Kimberley generating those showers there. Other parts of the tropics will stay fine and bright though, including Darwin.
