It’s all about winter in south-eastern Australia, thanks to this final cold front in a series that we’ve seen this week that’s going to bring another round of showers, hail, thunder, welcome snowfall to the alpine areas, gusty winds and maybe some elevated seas and swell on the high tide as well, particularly through parts of Victoria and the far south coast of South Australia.
Otherwise, a weak trough may just bring a few light showers through inland parts of Queensland and New South Wales, and an upper low will start bringing some more patchy rain, showers and maybe a possible rumble of thunder or two to southern NT as we get into Friday night. Otherwise, high pressure will dominate the rest of the country.
It should be a fairly dry and cooler day across much of the East Coast, and the West Coast also looking dry and cooler.
So let’s look at all of that in more detail.
Firstly, in Queensland, a typical day in the Sunshine State with lots of sunshine right around the place, particularly our coastal areas.
Might see a puff of cloud or two, but otherwise a nice day.
Then there’s just those lingering light showers, as I showed you earlier, through parts of the inland areas, but most will stay dry with that.
Pretty cool though through inland areas.
Temperatures in the low 20s, getting into the mid to high 20s for our coastal and northern parts of the state, as well as south-eastern parts of Queensland.
Staying in the 30s, as always, for the far north.
Brisbane looking at partly cloudy and 26°C on Friday, and that’ll be similar for much of south-east Queensland.
Moving down into New South Wales, and the focus really will be the ACT and around south-east New South Wales.
We’re going to see these cold westerly winds bring showers and snow areas to our Snowy Mountains, I should say, and even up into the Central West as well.
Very chilly as well.
Temperatures probably in the high single figures to low double figures, with those cold conditions spreading right across the state, except for our far north-east where they’ll stay warm, dry and sunny, with temperatures in the mid-20s there.
A chilly one in Sydney after what’s been a milder week, 19°C, but the wind chill will make us feel even colder than that.
Classic winter’s day in Canberra: cold, wet, windy, bitter in that wind.
Temperatures, while we do say 10°C here is a max, it’s going to feel much more like 4°C, 5°C or 6°C for much of the day, and we’re likely to see snow for the elevated parts around town as well.
Moving down into Victoria, winter definitely here. Cold, wet and windy conditions for southern and mountain parts of the state.
Maybe some heavier falls of snow through our alpine areas of Victoria and New South Wales.
We’re likely to see a welcome 20 to 40 cm there from Thursday night to Saturday morning, with showers continuing across much of the southern parts of Victoria.
Temperatures in the low to mid teens, as we’d expect.
Maybe scrape a 15°C here or there, drying out across the far north-west, but showers right across the rest of the state.
Melbourne, a cool 14°C, cloudy conditions and widespread showers, particularly for our eastern and south-eastern suburbs.
Moving down into Tasmania, and rain will continue across northern and western parts of the state.
There’ll be a brief break in the morning, and then watch this next cold front coming from the south-west, and that’s going to sweep across during the afternoon and overnight period with even colder air.
Could see snow down to around 400 or 500 m for our western and southern parts of the state. So some treacherous conditions if you head out and about down there.
Otherwise, a cool day, dry on the east coast, wet elsewhere with showers, gusty winds, temperatures in the low teens.
Hobart looking at a few showers and 13°C.
Maybe even see some flakes in those high, elevated suburbs into the evening, so watch out for that.
As we move into South Australia, we’ll see showers continuing there on Friday in the morning, but notice that they ease and contract into Victoria during the afternoon and evening.
A cloudy to partly cloudy day in the south with a few showers. Mostly sunny day in northern parts of the state.
Temperatures in the low teens in the south and mid to high teens elsewhere. Adelaide looking at a few showers, mostly clearing by the afternoon, and 15°C.
Now if we move into WA, showers will continue across southern coastal parts and maybe a few inland spots as well, but generally dry for much of the state.
Temperatures in the mid to high teens through southern and south-western parts of the state, only warming up into the low to mid 20s through northern parts of WA there, with lots of sunshine, and may even see a few showers up around the WA border.
Perth looking at not a bad winter’s day, 18°C and partly cloudy skies.
And then finally, across our tropical north, we’re likely to see dry, warm and sunny conditions, as always this time of year, but could see a few coastal showers on Cape York and across the Top End, eastern parts of Arnhem Land there, but generally a dry, warm and sunny day in the north.
Cloud and showers may be through central and particularly southern parts of the NT, with that upper low I mentioned earlier. So it could be a cooler and wetter one there at The Rock.
Not too bad though, Alice, 21°C.
And then your typical fine, warm, dry temperatures in the low 30s through northern parts of the NT. Darwin looking at 32°C and partly cloudy.
So with all the weather around, particularly in south-eastern parts of the country, remember to get the latest forecast and warnings via our website, app and social media, and we’ll be back again tomorrow with your weekend forecast.
