Native Plant Giveaway Returns For 2026

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin’s popular Native Plant Giveaway program returns this dry season with five community giveaway events taking place across the municipality.

More than 2,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses will be available at each event, providing residents with the opportunity to enhance their gardens while supporting local biodiversity and wildlife.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the annual program is an important part of City of Darwin’s commitment to creating a cooler, greener and more liveable Darwin.

“Our Native Plant Giveaway program gives residents an easy and practical way to contribute to a greener city while creating beautiful, resilient gardens at home,” Mr Styles said.

“Native plants are perfectly suited to Darwin’s tropical climate as they require less water and maintenance than many introduced species, while also providing valuable habitat for local birds, frogs, lizards and other wildlife.

“Every plant added to a backyard helps strengthen our urban canopy, supports biodiversity and contributes to a cooler, more sustainable municipality.

“These giveaways are always popular, so I encourage residents to arrive early as plants are available while stocks last,” he said.

Each giveaway will run from 8.00 am to 11.00 am at the following locations:

  • Saturday 11 July 2026 – Moil Oval playground area (Waters Ward)
  • Saturday 12 September 2026 – Alawa Oval Dog Park (Richardson Ward)
  • Saturday 17 October 2026 – The Esplanade (Lyons Ward)

An additional event will be held on Saturday 22 August 2026 at the Jingili Water Gardens, as part of the Top End Native Eco-Fair. Times will be confirmed closer to the date.

The program is open to Darwin residents only. Each household may collect up to six plants and proof of Darwin residency is required.
