Townsville City Council has completed works on the Nelly Bay Groyne on Magnetic Island.
The project will prevent beach sand from passing under the southern breakwater bridge and into the Nelly Bay Harbour, which will assist in preserving the beach environment for the community and tourists.
Completion of the groyne will now enable Council to begin restoring the Nelly Bay Esplanade and beach without losing the sand into the harbour.
Due to king tides occurring this week, further beach replenishment works are scheduled to commence from Friday.
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the completion of the groyne wall marked a significant collaborative step forward in protecting the beach area from sand erosion.
“Council acknowledges Queensland Government grant funding has been allocated for the construction of the 50-metre groyne,” Cr Greaney said.
“This project is a long term, sustainable solution for this precious natural and cultural area.
“The outer sandbags have been fitted with vandal resistant materials to avoid the chance of slashing or intentional damage.
“Council appreciates the cooperation and support of the Magnetic Island Community during the delivery of this important restoration project.”
