The Cook Labor Government has partnered with MSWA to officially open a new $26.8 million supported accommodation facility in Shenton Park, providing purpose-built homes for Western Australians with complex neurological conditions and high physical support needs.
Backed by a $14 million Cook Labor Government contribution, MSWA Shenton Park features 20 apartments designed to give residents greater independence and control over their daily lives.
The MSWA facility will provide long-term homes for residents relocating from the Quadriplegic Centre, alongside accommodation for an additional nine Western Australians with neurological conditions and high physical support needs.
Residents have begun moving into their new homes, where MSWA will provide 24-hour support tailored to their individual needs.
Located in DevelopmentWA’s Montario Quarter precinct, the facility was designed in consultation with MSWA clients and Quadriplegic Centre residents to reflect their needs and preferences.
Apartments have been purpose-built to support greater independence, with assistive technology tailored to individual residents. Features can include eye-gaze and minimal-movement controls to operate doors, adjust beds and manage lighting and temperature.
Accessible outdoor spaces, a rooftop terrace, shared community areas and direct access to surrounding bushland paths provide opportunities for residents to spend time outdoors and connect with family, friends and neighbours.
Shenton Park is MSWA’s seventh high-support accommodation facility in Western Australia.
As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
“Moving into a new home is a significant moment, and for residents relocating from the Quadriplegic Centre, this move will mean new opportunities for independence with the support they need.
“Residents have helped shape the design of these homes, ensuring their needs and preferences are reflected in the places where they will live.
“Through our partnership with MSWA, residents will have access to around-the-clock support in homes designed to support their dignity, choice and independence.”
As stated by Planning and Lands and Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:
“Our government’s $14 million investment has helped turn this site within Montario Quarter into 20 purpose-built homes for Western Australians with high physical support needs.
“These apartments combine thoughtful design with technology to give residents greater independence.
“This facility builds on the former Quadriplegic Centre’s long connection to health and care, while giving residents a place within an established community, close to parklands, transport and local amenities.”
As stated by Disability Services Minister Hannah Beazley:
“Helping provide people with complex neurological conditions a purpose-built, safe and modern home to live in will make a significant difference to their daily lives.
“The safety and wellbeing of Western Australians living with disability remains a priority for the Cook Labor Government, and this project is a great example of our government working with the disability services sector to deliver what is needed.
“Having a home designed for people with high physical needs will also benefit the amazing carers and disability support workers who provide around-the-clock support to the residents.”
As stated by MSWA chief executive officer Melanie Kiely:
“For many people, having the right home can be the difference between simply receiving care and living life to their version of best.
“MSWA Shenton Park was designed and built to create an environment where people can pursue greater independence while remaining connected to their community.
“This project has only been possible through years of collaboration between our clients, the Quadriplegic Centre community, the Western Australian Government and our team.
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited to welcome residents into a place they can truly call home.”
