The popular Prom will soon offer more options for visitors, with tenders being sought to build new accommodation for the park.
Wilsons Promontory National Park is one of the state’s most popular places to stay. A ballot system is currently implemented during peak periods and near 100 per cent occupancy rates are recorded.
With funding through the $23 million Wilsons Prom Revitalisation project, two new units are planned alongside the existing collection of huts at Tidal River, providing more options for families and groups. Subject to assessments, ageing Wilderness Retreats in the same area may also be replaced.
At the northern end of the national park, on property just outside the boundary, new studio-style units are also planned. The units will offer a new base for visitors to explore tracks and trails through remote north-eastern sections of the Prom.
Elsewhere in the park, investment through the Victoria’s Great Outdoors program will be provide for upgrades to powered sites at the Tidal River campground. During summer, this very popular campground had about 140,000 people stay.
In addition to new accommodation options, the Wilsons Prom Revitalisation project will be delivering new walks, a revamped visitor precinct at Tidal River, and congestion and carparking solutions. Together, these works will help people to visit, stay and learn about the park in a more sustainable way.
To protect the Prom’s unique landscape and help native animals and habitat flourish, the project is also delivering a predator-proof fence. Extending across the Yanakie Isthmus at the park’s northern boundary, the specially designed fence will help to keep animals like foxes, feral cats and deer. Supported by invasive species control, large-scale habitat restoration and threatened species recovery projects, the fence will turn the national park into Victoria’s largest conservation sanctuary.
