New AIC research evaluates Australia’s National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery 2020-25

The Australian Institute of Criminology has published new research evaluating Australia’s National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery 2020-25:

• Findings show the plan was successfully implemented and achieved positive outcomes including improvements in awareness of and training in modern slavery, increases in reporting to police and referrals to support services, and the strengthening of partnerships and the evidence base.
• Several areas for improvement are also identified, including the irregular and time-limited implementation of many awareness raising, training and education initiatives; the need for more emphasis in these initiatives on translating awareness into action; the short-term nature of many funding arrangements; the need for more engagement with states and territories and persons with lived experience of modern slavery; and the persistence of certain evidence gaps.
• Eleven recommendations are made for Australia’s next strategic response to modern slavery based on these findings.
