Multiple projects will receive over $9 million in Australian Government funding under the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area (HVRA) initiative.
The projects will deliver new and improved facilities on key freight corridors in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, and upgrade rest areas in Queensland.
In NSW, funded projects include:
- the delivery of 2 rest areas on Ivanhoe Road in the Balranald Shire, one on the Dowling Track at Yantabulla in the Bourke Shire and a relocation of a truck stop on Albury Road in the Lockhart Shire.
In South Australia, funded projects include:
- the construction of 2 new heavy vehicle rest areas on the Stuart Highway – one at Gosse Range and the other at Five Mile.
In Queensland, funded projects include:
- upgrades to the rest area at Burra Range on the Flinders Highway between Charters Towers and Hughenden, as well as multiple rest stops on the Gore Highway between Toowoomba and Goondiwindi, and on Leichhardt Highway between Miles and Goondiwindi.
In Western Australia, funded projects include:
- construction of 8 new informal rest areas across 4 major corridors in the Meekatharra Shire, including 2 new rest areas on each of the Ashburton Downs-Meekatharra Road, Wiluna Road North, Landor-Meekatharra Road and Sandstone Road.
The HRVA initiative supports safer journeys for truck drivers and other road users by giving heavy vehicle drivers more places to stop, rest and return to the road safely.
Over $59 million has been committed to support the construction of new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas in locations of need as part of the program so far.
The next tranche of applications is now open through the Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program (SLRIP).
