AgForce General President Georgie Somerset today welcomed the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack of a $20 million upgrade to the John Peterson Bridge in the North Burnett.
Mrs Somerset said the upgrades were important because they would better connect our communities and improve the links between paddocks and ports.
“Thriving agricultural regions like the inland Burnett, with valuable mineral deposits and an emerging manufacturing sector relies heavily on road transport to move produce and raw materials,” Mrs Somerset said.
“The commitment shown by the Federal Government to improving the safety and efficiency of this section of our road network is fantastic news.
“Improving road and rail infrastructure to create connected communities is one of our key Federal election asks, so we’re very happy with this outcome, especially as transport can make up to 40% of a producer’s costs.
“The flow-on effect of improving transport infrastructure is the benefits it brings to the sustainability and growth of local industry and the regional communities it supports.”
Kristy Frahm, CEO Burnett Inland Economic Development Organisation (BIEDO) was similarly full of praise for the announcement.
She said the current single-lane timber bridge was flood prone and desperately in need of replacement and that a new two-lane concrete bridge would improve road access and reliability.
“As part of the Mundubbera to Jandowae Roads Working Group, we’ve been working with all levels of government, as well as local organisations, to collaborate and prioritise solutions to create connected communities through a focus on infrastructure,” Ms Frahm said.
“Road conditions have a significant impact on businesses and individuals from wear and tear of vehicles, increased maintenance costs and increased time of travel seeking alternative routes.
“That’s why we’re hoping this is just the first of many similar announcements.”
