New ceiling for Byron Bay library

The Byron Bay library will be closed from Saturday 2 October 2021 for two weeks so the ceiling can be repaired.

Regular visitors to the library will be aware that the children’s area of the library has been closed for more than 12 months because of safety issues with the ceiling structure.

Council was hoping the repairs could have been done during the COVID lockdowns but it has been challenging to schedule the work around the lockdowns and the border restrictions.

The library was built in 2012 and the problems with the ceiling resulted from the original build.

Deb Stafford, Manager Social and Cultural Planning, said Council does not have to pay for the cost of repairs which are estimated to be up to $80,000.

The library is expected to reopen on Monday 18 October, but this will also depend on COVID-related restrictions which may be in place at the time.

“It will be terrific to see the children’s area full of happy, little faces discovering the joys of lifelong learning in our community,” Ms Stafford said.
