New Chair of Sentencing Advisory Council appointed

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

I am pleased to announce that Michael O’Farrell SC has been appointed as the new Chair of Tasmania’s Sentencing Advisory Council (SAC).

Mr O’Farrell brings extensive legal knowledge to the role with nearly 40 years’ experience in the legal profession in Tasmania, most recently as Tasmania’s Solicitor-General of Tasmania. Mr O’Farrell finished serving in that role in December 2021.

Mr O’Farrell has made a significant contribution to the legal profession during his career, and I congratulate him on this appointment. I am confident he will continue to serve Tasmania in this important role providing advice from the SAC to me as Attorney-General on a range of sentencing matters.

Mr O’Farrell replaces the outgoing Chair, Emeritus Professor Arie Freiberg, who retired as Chairperson of SAC on 31 December 2021 after almost 10 years in the role.

I would like to take this opportunity to again thank Professor Freiberg for his significant contribution to the work of SAC during his time as Chair, and wish him well for his future endeavours.
