NSW Police Force Commissioner Mal Lanyon APM has today announced the appointment of a new Deputy Commissioner.
Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook APM has been appointed to the role of Deputy Commissioner, Corporate Services, and will take on the role officially in early September.
Deputy Commissioner Dean Smith will move from Corporate Services to Metropolitan Field Operations.
Commissioner Lanyon has congratulated Deputy Commissioner Cook on his appointment.
“Deputy Commissioner Cook has had a distinguished career spanning over 38 years and brings a wealth of operational and leadership experience to the role,” Commissioner Lanyon said.
“His career has gone from General Duties to investigations including Homicide, making him well placed to take on the responsibilities of Deputy Commissioner.
“I am pleased to welcome him to the Executive Team and look forward to working together to lead the NSW Police Force into the future.
“On behalf the NSW Police Force, I congratulate Deputy Commissioner Cook on his appointment and wish him every success in this important role.
“I also want to acknowledge and thank Deputy Commissioner Smith for his outstanding leadership of Corporate Services.”
Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley has welcomed the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Cook.

Deputy Commissioner Cook’s bio:
Deputy Commissioner Cook commenced with the NSW Police Force on the 31st of July 1988, and has served in General Duties in Western Sydney, investigations units such as Asian Crime, Robbery, Organised Crime and Homicide.
He rose to the rank of Sergeant in 2001, Inspector in 2006, Superintendent in 2010 and Assistant Commissioner in 2019.
He’s served as Assistant Commissioner for Police Prosecutions and Licensing Enforcement Command, State Intelligence Command and State Crime Command.
Over his 38 years of service Deputy Commissioner Cook has been awarded a Commissioner’s Unit Citation, along with a number of Commander’s Commendations, the Australian Police Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, the NSW Police Medal and the National Medal.
