The Cook Labor Government is helping regional students develop the skills they need for the jobs of the future.
Announced today, a $1.15 million investment is funding state of the art electrotechnology workshops as well as infrastructure upgrades at three South Regional TAFE (SR TAFE) campuses.
A Certificate II in Electrotechnology is now available at SR TAFE’s Katanning and Esperance campuses as part of the VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) program.
The program sees SR TAFE partner with local schools to equip Year 11 and 12 students with foundational skills in electrotechnology.
In addition, electrotechnology training is also now available at SR TAFE’s Margaret River campus.
Mainstream preapprenticeship course delivery commenced at the start of Semester 2, 2026. VETDSS preapprenticeships will be delivered at the campus from 2027.
Building a skilled local workforce is a priority of the Cook Labor Government’s Made in WA Plan. Electricians play a critical role in delivering renewable energy projects and energyefficient technologies across regional and metropolitan Western Australia.
As of 30 June 2026, there were more than 6,115 electrical apprentices in training in Western Australia.
In the 12 months to 30 June 2026, electrical apprenticeship commencements have increased more than 24 per cent and completions have increased by almost 30 per cent, helping to fuel the pipeline of skilled tradespeople for WA’s diversifying economy.
As stated by Skills and TAFE Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“By investing in new and upgraded facilities at South Regional TAFE’s campuses we’re helping Western Australians to get started in an electrical career, which is critical to our economy.
“I want everyone to benefit from the opportunities and jobs our diversifying economy presents for a future that’s Made In WA.”
