Labor delivered the bigger and better Footscray Hospital – bringing more care, closer to home for families in the west.
Six months since it opened, thousands of Victorians have already accessed world-class care.
Since February, the new $1.5 billion hospital has:
- Cared for around 19,000 admitted patients
- Supported around 23,000 emergency department presentations
- Performed more than 5,000 surgeries
- Delivered close to 50,000 specialist outpatient clinic appointments
- Served almost 100,000 patient meals.
Once fully operational, it will have more than 500 beds – an increase of 200 – and treat an additional 15,000 patients every year.
The new ED is also able to support an additional 20,000 patients every year.
It features more resuscitation bays, fast-track bays, and acute and short stay beds, as well as a high-tech satellite radiology hub for faster patient care.
The ED also has a mental health and alcohol and other drugs hub to ease pressure on resources and improve safety.
It means patients are fast-tracked to an area with specialist, dedicated care so they get the right support sooner.
The new hospital has also welcomed a team of approximately 120 volunteers, collectively speaking more than 30 languages – reflecting the diverse Footscray community.
Only Labor invests in Victoria’s world-class public health system, opening 12 new hospitals right across the state.
In Melbourne’s west, Labor is also delivering the brand new Melton Hospital, a Community Hospital in Point Cook and an expanded ED at Werribee Mercy.

With a $40 billion cuts plan, Victorians can expect closures, privatisations and a public health system at risk. They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again.
