New fruit tree netting regulations

From 1 September 2021, netting used to protect household fruit-trees, vegetable gardens, or other fruiting plants must have a mesh size of 5mm x 5mm or less at full stretch under the Victorian Department of Agriculture’s new regulations.

Household fruit trees and vegetable gardens produce an inviting and tempting food source for native possums, birds and fruit bats.

Using loose fitting and wide gaged netting can trap many of these animals, as they can become tangled and in their struggle to free themselves can cause major injury by inflicting deep cuts and strangulation, which often leads to their death.
