The Albanese Labor Government will help more First Nations social enterprises grow and transform lives with a new dedicated $2.52 million grant round under the Social Enterprise Development Initiative (SEDI) opening today.
From book publishers, land care organisations to businesses providing employment training, First Nations social enterprises are putting people and culture at the centre of what they do, while helping to create local job opportunities and empower the communities they’re a part of.
Grants of up to $120,000 will be available for eligible First Nations social enterprises to help expand their impact, supporting activities like business planning and financial management so businesses can grow.
Since 2023, the government has provided grants to 19 First Nations social enterprises under the SEDI. Previously successful grant recipients include:
- Magabala Books, an Aboriginal community-controlled publisher that invests in cultural, historical and educational stories and the development of Indigenous authors and illustrators, as well as literacy and cultural connection for First Nations children.
- BlackRock Industries, a NSW-based 100% First Nations organisation that provides second chances to incarcerated men, focusing on employment and training towards the end of their sentencing.
- Bush Balm by Purple House, an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing access to free bush medicine throughout remote Australia and providing supportive, meaningful employment for young First Nations women.
First Nations social enterprises can apply for these capability building grants through the (link is external)SEDI Grants Administrator website from Wednesday, 22 July 2026 with applications assessed as they’re received until funding is exhausted.
