New indoor sports courts open in Alexandria

The City of Sydney has doubled the number of indoor sports courts available at Alexandria’s Perry Park as it continues to transform the former rubbish tip into a bustling sporting precinct. Two existing outdoor courts have been enclosed and opened at Perry Park Recreation Centre, creating four all-year-round, all-weather indoor courts for netball, futsal, badminton, volleyball and basketball. For the first time international level futsal games can be hosted at the centre and tiered seating for bigger crowds is now available. “We know our community needs more diverse and accessible recreational facilities, so we’re delighted to be able to provide more quality indoor courts for local sporting groups, schools, residents and workers in this growing neighbourhood,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. “For many people who live in the inner city, our open space and recreation centres are their only backyard, providing important spaces to play, exercise and meet. “We’re pleased to be welcoming Sydneysiders back to our community spaces and we’ve created these indoor courts for use by a greater variety of sporting groups.” The City of Sydney has installed additional solar panels on the centre’s roof and infrastructure to run toilets and other amenities using recycled water harvested from the centre rooftop in the future. Perry Park Recreation Centre opened in 2019 featuring two indoor sports courts and two outdoor courts designed for this recently completed conversion to indoor courts. The centre runs multiple sports competitions and courts are available for hire. The courts are the latest in a series of projects transforming the former waste site. Construction on the next phase of work is expected to get underway early next year and includes a FIFA-sized multipurpose sports field, spectator seating, a covered outdoor area and amenities, and an open lawn where locals can relax. Perry Park Recreation Centre is on Maddox Street in Alexandria. It is close to Green Square train station and the Bourke Road cycleway is on its doorstep.
