Tasmania’s new-look police vehicles have been unveiled to spearhead this year’s Easter road safety campaign.
Police Commissioner Darren Hine said that this Easter, Tasmania Police could be anywhere, any time, and in any vehicle.
“We’re once again targeting high-risk driving behaviours that are the main causes of serious and fatal crashes – but in new-look vehicles, both high visibility and unmarked,” Commissioner Hine said.
“Today we’re unveiling the new livery of our police vehicle fleet – general patrol vehicles for around city areas, high visibility vehicles for patrolling 110kmh highways, low profile patrol vehicles to provide a unique method of traffic enforcement on major highways, and unmarked vehicles for targeted covert patrols.
“In addition, we’re announcing that the unmarked police motorcycle trial to detect high-risk road behaviours in slow-moving and stationary traffic will be extended statewide.”
Mr Hine said that the Southern District trial had been a huge success, targeting those traffic offences which lead to increased congestion, such as mobile phones, parking in clearways, running red lights and blocking intersections.
“This has resulted in the detection of over 1000 high risk traffic offences in 3 months and anecdotally has already had a significant impact on driver behaviour,” Commissioner Hine said.
“We’ll now be using multiple bikes, which will be rotated around all three police districts.”
Commissioner Hine said that he wanted to reinforce the message police could be anywhere, any time and in any vehicle.
“Our message is simple: drive safely on our roads or risk the consequences.
“This means slow down, put your mobile phone away, wear your seatbelt, and don’t drive while tired or after drinking or taking drugs.
“It only takes a split second for tragedy to unfold on our roads…so please drive responsibly this Easter for everyone’s sake.”
