New Miandetta playground already a hit

Local children have wasted no time in making good use of the new contemporary playground in Miandetta.

In its first two weeks of operation the area’s only playground has attracted a steady stream of happy young children and parents eager to take advantage of Miandetta’s only playground.

It has been built on vacant council parkland on Berrigan Road, north of the shopping centre and south of residences in Mungala Crescent.

Before it was built the closest public playground to Miandetta was a limited facility in Madden Street with the nearest significant playground at Bluff Beach, further to the north.

Yet, as at 30 June 2017, ABS Census information showed the area capturing Miandetta and Don, to the west, was the fastest growing population region in Devonport, and one of the fastest growing in Tasmania.

As a result, more than 200 people petitioned the Council for the playground and Council approved its construction in May last year.

Importantly the community was given a say in the design of the facility.

The community was asked to decide between flying fox and adventure options for the new playground with the adventure option proving to be clearly the most popular.

The Mayor, Cr Annette Rockliff said she was pleased with how quickly the playground was constructed following the approval of the design.

”It only took about five weeks to build the playground and despite the short time local children have been provided with a modern playground which will serve local children for many years to come,” she said.

”Residents presented a very strong case to support their campaign and Council was only too please to not only support it but to make it happen speedily.”

Local parent Megan Krawczyk, who organised last year’s petition, said she was delighted with the new playground.

”I think it is a brilliant space where families can enjoy the opportunity to play with their children. It is fantastic,” she said.

”It might have seemed to have taken a long time (for a playground to be built in the area) but the speed with which it has been built has been awesome.”
