New Online Service for Environmental Management Plans

NT Government

Safeguarding our environment is important to the Territory Labor Government.

Today the Territory Government has strengthened the implementation of a recommendation of the Hydraulic Fracturing Pepper Inquiry with the establishment of a new online subscription service for Environment Management Plans (EMPs).

The new online subscription service allows the community to have their say and keep up-to-date on drilling and hydraulic fracturing EMPs that are under assessment. The community can have their say here: EMPs under assessment – Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security here.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security is responsible for managing the assessment and approval of onshore petroleum EMPs. The Government values the community’s input, which informs decisions by the Minister about drilling and hydraulic fracturing EMPs.

Drilling and hydraulic fracturing EMPs are open for public comment for 28 days.

Quotes from the Minister for Environment, Eva Lawler:

“When it comes to our environment, transparency and accountability are crucial to ensuring the community’s trust in Government processes and decision-making.

“We welcome the community’s input on drilling and hydraulic fracturing EMPs and remain committed to constantly improving our assessment and decision-making processes.

“The public has always had 28 days to comment on EMPs and this new online subscription service will give interested individuals the ability to be notified when a new EMP is lodged.

“Rolling out this new subscription service enables us to improve and streamline the regulatory regime and ensure the public can have its say, regardless of where they live or what their concerns or interests are when it comes to onshore petroleum activities.”
