The University of Melbourne has welcomed the opening of a new home for Orygen, the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health and Orygen Youth Health in Parkville.
The University, a member of Orygen, contributed $5 million towards the $81 million facility, which will provide services to up to 5,000 young people per year and further boost Orygen’s cutting-edge research and training.
The State Government provided $60 million, Federal Government $8 million, Colonial Foundation $5 million, and the Ian Potter Foundation $3 million.
University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Jim McCluskey and Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Dean Shitij Kapur joined Orygen Executive Director Patrick McGorry, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and State Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley at the official opening today.
Professor Maskell said: “Orygen is a world-leader in youth mental health. Under the leadership of Professor Patrick McGorry, Orygen has undertaken fantastic work towards the prevention and treatment of mental disorders in young people. This new facility provide a much-needed boost to their vital services.”
