New Public Art Opportunity at Ben Kavanagh Reserve

The City of Kingston and Kingston Arts are excited to announce a new public art opportunity for visual artists.

We’re looking to engage an experienced artist to deliver a large sports-themed mural at the recently redeveloped Ben Kavanagh Reserve in Mordialloc.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said Council is always looking for opportunities to support public art projects within our community. “Ben Kavanagh Reserve is undergoing an exciting transformation and this proposed mural in consultation with the local community will add something very special to the newly redeveloped facilities,” said Cr Staikos.

A total budget of $17,000 including GST is available for this commission with the mural to be painted on the proposed rebound wall (preferably on both sides of the wall) and next to the cricket nets adjacent to Bear Street, in consultation with the local community.

Acting Cultural Producer and Partnerships Coordinator, Victoria O’Shea said: “Kingston Arts is thrilled to provide this vital funding opportunity for the arts and is looking forward to supporting the selected artist throughout the development of the work and community engagement.”

The Ben Kavanagh Reserve is home to a wide range of local sports groups including the Mordialloc Sporting Club, Mordialloc Super Rules Football Club, Mordialloc Junior Football Club, Mordialloc Football/Netball Club, Mordialloc Cricket Club, Mordialloc Bowls Club, Longbeach Petanque group and other community groups.

Works are underway to transform the Reserve including the construction of new Netball Courts, Petanque Pistes, outdoor fitness stations, new shared path network, landscaping and a rebound wall which can be used for various sports practice.

Applicants do not need to live in the City of Kingston to apply. Information on the application process and expression of interest form are available on the Kingston Arts website kingstonarts.com.au. Applications close Friday 15 February 2021.
