A new strategic plan to further strengthen support for LGBTQA+ communities in Tasmania has been launched today.
Commissioner Donna Adams said that the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management LGBTIQA+ Action Plan 2023-2026 was a testament to our commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics.
“The Department of Police, Fire, and Emergency Management, has always been committed to fostering a workplace that celebrates the vibrant diversity of our community,” she said.
“We are listening to the community and the State Government’s LGBTIQA+ survey data has helped inform some of these actions.
“This Action Plan represents more than just words on paper; it is a tangible demonstration of our dedication to strengthening relationships with LGBTIQA+ communities.
“Over the next three years, we will embark on a journey that involves realistic and achievable goals, comprehensive training programs, community initiatives, and policy reforms. These initiatives will empower our staff, members, and volunteers to serve the diverse Tasmanian communities with compassion, understanding, and utmost respect.”
Commissioner Adams said that DPFEM’s commitment to inclusivity extends to every facet of our activities, including the emergency services and first responders who play a crucial role in keeping the Tasmanian community safe.
“The Action Plan will be supported by Tasmania Police LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officers, DPFEM’s LGBTIQA+ Support Network members, and the Emergency Service LGBTIQA+ Strategic Working Group. Together, they will ensure that every member of our community receives effective and sensitive responses from DPFEM personnel,” she said.
“Today we’re also launching our new video, which celebrates how far we’ve come in supporting LGBTIQA+ communities.
“This video – produced by Daniel Peek – features members and friends of the LGBTIQA+ communities and aims to promote the fantastic work our LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officer in providing crucial support.”
Commissioner Adams thanked everyone who contributed to the development of the Action Plan, particularly the members of our LGBTIQA+ Strategic Working Group, liaison and support networks.
“Through the implementation of this Action Plan, we aim to break down barriers, eliminate discrimination, and foster a more compassionate and equitable Tasmania. Our vision is clear: to make DPFEM a leading government agency in supporting the LGBTIQA+ communities,” she said.
“As we move forward, we will embrace this opportunity for positive change, and together, we will help build a future where every member of our community feels valued, respected, and supported.”
