Consultation is starting on a new memorial for veterans who have died by suicide in Townsville.
Operation Cor Infinitus is a national initiative created by Kevin Humphreys to respect the memory of veterans lost to their hidden mental health battles following their service.
“Cor Infinitus means ‘infinite courage’. As families deal with the aftermath of a loved one taking their own life, they need infinite courage,” Mr Humphreys said.
“We want to give the families and loved ones of veterans who have taken their life a place for solemn reflection, just like the memorials that exist for other casualties of service.
“The memorial will say ‘you are not alone, we see you and we’re here with you’ to remind families and loved ones that they have a community to turn to in their grief.
“The memorial will be anonymous. It will not have a list of names, with the intent for it to be owned by all of the families of those lost.”
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Council was throwing its full support behind the initiative.
“Townsville is a proud garrison city with many veterans and military families choosing to live here. Being able to support these members of our community is absolutely vital, especially when it comes to families and friends living with the loss of their loved ones who have taken their own lives,” Cr Hill said.
“Council is proud to support the introduction of a Cor Infinitus memorial at Anzac Park alongside other military memorials to honour the memory of veterans lost to suicide.”
Families can submit their feedback on the Cor Infinitus memorial until Thursday, July 30.
