New wave of enthusiasm for iconic Red Centre experience

The unique Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta returns to the Red Centre today with a new race category to celebrate the event’s 61st anniversary.

This year local organisations, sports and hobby groups will battle it out to win a cash prize in the new ‘Yeperenye Cash for Clubs’ race.

The initiative will provide a novel way for clubs to tap into the Regatta’s friendly, competitive spirit while raising funds at the same time.

The only dry-river boating regatta in the world has raised in excess of $1.7 million for Rotary clubs in Alice Springs since it began.

Thrilling visitors and spectators for years, the one-of-a-kind event sees teams battle it out in bottomless boats, canoes and bathtubs as they race across the red sand of the dry Todd River, around a buoy and back to the finish line.

There’s the main Bring Your Own Boat race along with sand shovelling, ‘lifesaver’ rescue missions, boogie board races and the famous Battle of the Gun Boats finale, complete with water pistols and flour bomb armed pirates.

For the kids, there are also Nippers races, a lolly scramble and sandcastle building.

The Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta kicks off with a parade down Todd Mall from 10.30am, with the official opening at Snow Kenna Park and Alice Springs Todd River at 11.30am.
