Newcastle Airport has been named Australia’s Airport of the Year at the 2026 Australian Aviation Awards, recognising its transformation into an international gateway for the Hunter and regional NSW.
Port Stephens Council, a joint owner of Newcastle Airport, congratulates the airport team on the national recognition following a significant year of growth, investment and development.
The national award recognises Newcastle Airport’s successful delivery of its international terminal, expansion of its domestic and international route network, commitment to passenger experience, and contribution to regional jobs and economic growth.
Newcastle Airport was selected from a strong field of finalists including Launceston Airport, Mackay Airport, Melbourne Airport and Port Hedland International Airport.
The award follows a significant period of growth for the airport, including the opening of its international terminal and the introduction of new domestic and international routes, providing more travel choice and strengthening connections between the Hunter and destinations across Australia and overseas.
The airport’s expansion is also supporting tourism, trade, investment and employment opportunities across the region, including Port Stephens.
Newcastle Airport was also recognised for its operational readiness, innovative terminal design and sustainability initiatives, including carbon reduction, Green Star certification and sustainable airport operations.
The award caps a significant year for Newcastle Airport as it continues its transition from a regional airport to an international gateway for the Hunter.
