The $3.1 million upgrade of Lilac Hill Park has transformed the cricket grounds into a modern and inclusive venue that will meet the future needs of the booming sporting community in WA.

Officially opened on Saturday, February 15 by the Hon. Michelle Roberts MLA, who represented the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Lilac Hill Park now boasts a newly refurbished main building and new female-friendly change rooms.

The City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said the improvements would support local sports clubs, which are at the heart of many communities, and cater to the huge growth of women’s participation in sports.

“In WA, women’s participation in cricket is up 202 per cent for adults and 118 per cent for girls in just three years, and these upgrades are part of the City’s ongoing commitment to the continued support of our female athletes,” he said.

“Lilac Hill has been a cornerstone of the Perth cricket community since it opened in 1983 – and it is the home of other sports clubs including roughly 100 female hockey club members based there in winter.

“The City also partners with the Perth Scorchers for the WBBL each summer, which attracts more than 5,000 people to Lilac Hill Park.”

Patron of the Midland Guildford Cricket Club Brian Rakich AM said he was impressed with the upgrade to the Lilac Hill Park facilities.

“The upgrade has given WA cricket a first-class facility for women’s cricket, as well as the senior grades,” Brian said.

“The success of this project shows what can be achieved by volunteers, and local and state governments to produce and make the best use of outstanding facilities.”

The umpires change room, first aid room, match room office and the club room toilets and kitchen were also upgraded.

The redevelopment was jointly funded by the City of Swan ($2,750,000) and the State Government ($350,000).
