Major structural works at Newman Senior High School’s recreation centre are now complete, following a $3.5 million upgrade delivered by the Cook Labor Government.
The shared-use recreation centre – located at Newman Senior High School and shared with the Shire of East Pilbara – is a space valued by students and the community.
The upgrades began in September 2025 and included refurbishments to the toilets, repairs to the centre’s west wall and a partial replacement of the east wall.
The recreation centre continued to operate as works were completed, minimising disruption for Newman Senior High School students and the community, with repairs officially completed in July 2026.
This project forms part of the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to providing high-quality education infrastructure for Western Australian students, no matter where they live.
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
“The Newman Recreation Centre is an important asset to Newman Senior High School and the broader community, and I am pleased these significant upgrades have now been completed.
“This centre plays an important role in supporting sport, recreation and community connection, and it was wonderful to see the completed upgrades in-person during my recent visit to Newman.
“The Cook Labor Government’s investment has delivered essential structural repairs and improvements, helping to ensure the facility can continue to be enjoyed for years to come.”

“Newman is a strong community and facilities like this are part of what brings people together.
“I know how well used this recreation centre is by Newman Senior High School students, local families and sporting groups, so it’s fantastic to see these upgrades finished.
