Nine charged in South Coast crime blitz at Nowra

Nine people will face court later this month following a proactive police operation on the state’s south coast.

Over three days last week (Wednesday 9 October to Friday 11 October 2019), officers attached to South Coast Police District led a joint proactive crime team operation, seizing weapons, drugs and goods believed to be stolen.

Over the course of three days, police executed 33 person searches, seven move-on directions, eight vehicle searches and six drug detections.

Wednesday 9 October

  • A 20-year-old man from Sanctuary Point was charged with two counts of possess prohibited drug (methylamphetamine and cannabis) and possess knife in a public place as the result of a vehicle stop in East Nowra. He is due to face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019.
  • A 20-year-old woman from Worrigee was charged with driving whilst unlicenced as the result of a vehicle stop in East Nowra. She is due to face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019

Thursday 10 October

  • A 42-year-old female from Nowra was charged with shoplifting after it is alleged she stole $634 worth of groceries and cosmetics. She is due to face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019.
  • A 26-year-old male from Nowra was charged with shoplifting after it is alleged he stole $18 worth of underwear. He will face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019.
  • A 22-year-old female from Lake Heights was charged with possess prohibited drug and possess prescribed restricted substance after being arrested in a supermarket in Nowra. She is due to face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019.
  • A 42-year-old female from Nowra was charged with shoplifting after it is alleged she stole $115 worth of groceries. She is due to face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019.
  • A 40-year-old man from East Nowra was charged with possess prohibited drug as the result of a vehicle stop in East Nowra. He is due to face Nowra Local Court on 28 October 2019.
  • A 34-year-old man from Nowra was issued with a $300 Criminal Infringement Notice after being caught shoplifting from a supermarket in Nowra.

As a result of intelligence received during the operation, officers executed a search warrant at a residential address in East Nowra on Friday 11 October 2019. Officers located and seized drugs, knuckledusters, a baton and a can of oleoresin capsicum (pepper) spray. Police inquiries are continuing, and charges are expected to be laid.

As a result of an ongoing investigation into property theft in the South Coast Police District, Proactive Crime Team officers also interviewed a 44-year-old male at a correctional facility.

The Batemans Bay man was charged with a large number of serious offences including multiple counts of vehicle theft, larceny, goods in custody and traffic related offences and appeared in Batemans Bay Local Court yesterday (14 October 2019).

South Coast Police District Inspector David Cockram praised the proactive work of officers during the crime blitz.

“Offences such as shoplifting can have a detrimental impact on small businesses,” Inspector Cockram said.

“We will continue to target and disrupt crimes in all its forms across the South Coast region.”
