Candidates from five different countries have become the Kempsey Shire’s newest Australian Citizens.

Thursday’s Citizenship Ceremony at the Slim Dusty Centre saw candidates, guests and loved ones join in celebrations to welcome the new citizens to the community.

Mayor Leo Hauville hosted the ceremony and warmly greeted the citizens.

“Today you become Australian Citizens and join a nation that is one of the most successful multicultural societies,” said Councillor Hauville.

“In Australia, everyone can be proud of who they are – and everyone should be respected, valued and feel a sense of belonging. Thank you for deciding to become an Australian Citizen and thank you for choosing the Kempsey Shire. We look forward to the value you all will contribute to our community.”

The new citizens join the Kempsey Shire and Australia from countries Philippines, United Kingdom, Germany, Vietnam and Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

To become a citizen, candidates must make the Australian Citizenship Pledge at a Citizenship Ceremony. In doing so, they are making a public commitment to Australia and accepting the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.
