With nominations open for the 2021 Queensland Great Awards, Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman said the sunshine state had the perfect opportunity to celebrate our top achieving women as well as Queensland institutions headed up, or supportive of Queensland women.
“Women are often the quiet achievers in their communities and their significant contributions are not always captured by the public gaze,” Ms Fentiman said.
“This year has been a difficult year for us all, but there are so many incredible stories of determination and sacrifice, ingenuity and discovery, and unwavering commitment and compassion rising out of our health, science, frontline, community and business sectors.
“I invite Queenslanders to put forward the names of exceptional women they know or have been positively impacted by, to ensure these women’s efforts and talents are duly recognised”
Health and Wellbeing Queensland’s ‘Queenslandher’ social media campaign, launched last month, features a myriad of women who have shown tenacity and determination in rising above the challenges of one of Queensland’s most trying years.
Last year, the Queensland Greats Awards honoured three remarkable women: family violence prevention advocate Betty Taylor, former editor of the Fraser Coast Chronicle Nancy Bates OAM, and child safety champion Denise Morcombe OAM, along with the women of the PCYC.
Other ‘Great’ women of our state include biomedical researcher Distinguished Professor Judith Clements AC (2019); journalist and Co-Chair of the DFV Prevention Council, Kay McGrath OAM (2019); former Queensland Governor and Governor-General the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO (2016); former Brisbane Lord Mayor Dr Sallyanne Atkinson AO (2014); actress Deborah Mailman (2012); and artist (the Late) Dr Margaret Olley AC (2006).
Nominations for the 2021 Queensland Greats Awards close at 5pm, Friday 29 January 2021.
Recipients will be announced to coincide with Queensland Day on 6 June 2021 and honoured with commemorative plaques displayed at Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane.
