Nominations for Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award open Monday

Waverley Council

8 April 2022

Waverley Council is proud to announce that nominations for the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award open at 10am on Monday 11 April 2022.

The Nib Award is Waverley Council’s annual celebration of the best Australian research-based writing and is Australia’s only major national literary award of its kind presented by a local council. Previous winners include Tim Low, Helen Garner, Christopher Koch, Clare Wright, Gideon Haigh and Rebecca Giggs.

The Council encourages emerging and established authors, and their publishers, to nominate published literary works, regardless of genre, for consideration for the $20,000 major prize. Nominated works are judged against the Award’s unique criteria of excellence in research, literary merit, readability and value to the community. Winners are decided by an independent panel of three judges each of whom bring a wealth of experience from across the literary world.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said Waverley Council was immensely proud to be continuing to offer this Award and provide direct support to Australian writers, into a third decade.

“Waverley Council recognises the role that arts and culture play in defining our community and during this period of recovery during from COVID, we remain committed to supporting emerging and established writers through the Nib Award,” Mayor Masselos said.

“The Nib is highly respected both by the industry as well as our local community.”

This year, a total of $28,500 in prize money will be awarded across three categories:

  • Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award ($20,000 prize)
  • Alex Buzo Nib Shortlist Prize (6 x $1,000 prizes)
