Nominations open for annual Lord Mayoral Awards

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is pleased to open nominations for the annual Lord Mayoral Awards, providing City of Darwin residents an opportunity to recognise people with a disability who make workplaces, community groups and friendship groups great places to be.

Now in its fifth year, the Lord Mayoral Awards continue to gain momentum and Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was thrilled with the calibre of entrants received each year.

“The Lord Mayoral Awards recognise individuals with a disability who have made outstanding contributions to the Darwin community by advocating for the rights and wellbeing of people with disability,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Last year we celebrated two very worthy winners in Paul Johnes, who is committed to reducing stress and promoting positivity, and Abigail Maralngurra, the youngest member of the Freespace Public Art Collective, and I’m looking forward to seeing who is recognised this year.”

There are two award categories available; the Rising Star Award which is awarded to a person under 25 years of age who makes an ongoing contribution to their school, workplace or community advocating for the rights and well-being of people with disability; and the Champion Award, awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the community advocating for the rights and well-being of people with disability.

Nominations are open from Tuesday, 3 October until Friday, 3 November 2023 and the winners will be announced at the Carnival of Fun, a free celebration of International Day of People with Disability, held this year on Friday, 1 December 2023.

Winners of each category will receive a cash prize, a trophy and invitations to City of Darwin functions throughout the year.
