Mayor’s Message

Last week saw the introduction of the Victorian Government’s single-use plastics ban put in place across the state.

This includes single-use plastics such as straws, cutlery, plates and cotton bud sticks which are problematic for our environment and create a large amount of waste.

Any local businesses looking for support implementing the ban are encouraged to call the dedicated hotline on 1800 844 946 or visit the Victorian Government’s website www.vic.gov.au/plastics

At Council, we trialled our own ban on single-use plastic water bottles over the last 18 months at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium. We’ve saved thousands of plastic water bottles from landfill!

Our Latrobe Leisure facilities also removed single-use plastics over six months ago to reduce our impact on the environment. We’ve since provided 12,141 cardboard food trays, 583 bamboo cutlery sets and 4,309 paper cups.

We are proud to be making such a positive impact on our planet and doing our part to make a difference.

This week we also held our first Council Meeting of the year. Councillors were back ready to make crucial decisions on behalf of our community. Important topics were discussed including landslip remediation, the Morwell Activity Centre Plan and land developments.
