NRL Telstra Premiership 2019 finals series week one

Premiers Sydney Roosters will open a blockbuster NRL Telstra Premiership 2019 Finals Series on Friday night against traditional rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The NRL today confirmed the times and venues for Week One of the Finals Series, beginning with the first Finals match at the SCG for more than 80 years between the foundation clubs.

Week One of the Finals will also feature;

  • Minor Premiers Melbourne Storm facing Canberra Raiders on Saturday at AAMI Park.
  • Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles against Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks on Saturday at 7.50pm at Lottoland*;
  • Parramatta Eels clashing with Brisbane Broncos on Sunday at 4.05pm at Bankwest Stadium;
  • The Melbourne-Canberra and Eels-Broncos matches will be double headers, also featuring the Holden Women’s Premiership matches between Sydney Roosters and the Warriors and St George Illawarra and Brisbane Broncos respectively.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said the opening weekend of the Finals Series offered some wonderful match-ups.

“The competition for the top eight this year was remarkable,” Mr Greenberg said.

“The fact that the final place in the top eight was only confirmed in the second last match of the regular season is a reflection of the tightness of the competition.

“In the Finals Series, anything can happen on any given day, and a new competition will be beginning on Friday night.

“And the Finals Series will produce some wonderful storylines – the first Finals match between the Roosters and Souths at the SCG since 1938, and the first ever Finals match at the new Bankwest Stadium.”

Mr Greenberg said a number of considerations went into the construction of the Finals Series schedule.

“We need to take into account turnarounds – not just from Round 25 into Week One of the Finals, but also turnarounds throughout the entire Finals Series,” Mr Greenberg said.

“Additionally there is venue availability and our Holden Women’s Premiership to consider, as well as producing the best scenario for our fans when it comes to attendance as well as broadcast.

“We want as many people to experience our Finals Series matches as possible because they provide incredible entertainment and drama.”
