NSW Government must abandon COVID workers comp cuts

Unions NSW

The State Government should abandon its repeal of COVID workers compensation coverage for exposed workers, and failing that, crossbench parliamentarians should block the attack on workers’ rights.

Unions representing workers in retail, health, hospitality, prisons and the broader workforce are making the case to upper and lower house parliamentarians today.

“These cuts are cheap and nasty,” said Mark Morey, Secretary of Unions NSW.

“Any savings the State Government makes will be minuscule compared to the impact on individual workers.

“This will overwhelmingly affect women who have already borne the economic brunt of the pandemic.

“These workers put their own safety on the line to service the community and the Coalition wants to rip them off.

“COVID is not yet over and while we learn to live with the virus, we can’t wind back all the measures that were put in place for exposed workers.

“Workers should be rewarded for their efforts and for their resilience, not targeted by harsh, harmless and unnecessary cuts.

“If the State Government had not completely trashed iCare, it would not have to rely on this sort of callous behaviour.”
