Police are appealing for information after an aircraft was targeted by a laser pointer as it approached Broken Hill Airport last night.
About 8:30pm (Thursday 24 May 2019), a Royal Flying Doctors Service airplane was returning to Broken Hill Airport, when a high-powered green laser was shone into the cockpit.
Despite the distraction caused by the light, the pilot of was able to safely land the aircraft.
Officers attached to Barrier Police District were notified and commenced inquiries.
It is understood the origin of the laser light may have been South Broken Hill, potentially within an industrial area.
Inspector Yvette Smith from Barrier Police District is calling for people to understand the dangers of directing laser pointers at aircraft.
“The individuals who participate in this kind of behaviour need to understand the potential catastrophic consequences of their actions,” Inspector Smith said.
“If you or someone you know is directing laser pointers towards aircraft, we would implore you to stop before we are faced with a critical incident.”
