NSW police arrest two after police operation near Tenterfield

A man and woman have been arrested near Tenterfield in the state’s north west following a police operation.

Just before 7am today (Thursday 19 September 2019), officers from New England Police District were called to St George Street, Mungindi, following reports of a suspicious vehicle – a grey Mazda – parked behind the shops.

Checks of the vehicle’s registration revealed it was reported stolen from Cairns, Queensland.

As the police vehicle approached the Mazda, the driver accelerated and collided with the front of the police car, before driving off at speed.

A police pursuit was initiated, during which shots were fired at police. There were no reports of injuries.

Specialist resources from NSW and Queensland were deployed to assist with the operation and when the vehicle stopped in the middle of the Bruxner Highway, traffic diversions were put in place.

About 11.30am, officers arrested a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman without incident.

They were taken to Tenterfield Police Station, where they are assisting with inquiries.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.

Police would like to thank the public for their assistance, especially a local farmer who flew his helicopter and assisted police by providing coordinates until aerial police resources arrived.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
