NSW police charge man after crashing into cars; assaulting police at Bankstown

A man has been charged after allegedly crashing into multiple cars and assaulting police following an attempted vehicle stop in Bankstown today.

Just after 12.30pm (Wednesday 20 January 2021), officers attached to the South West Metropolitan OSG attempted to stop a Toyota Hiace after it allegedly drove through a red light on Stacey Street.

It’s alleged the vehicle failed to stop and instead drove into a nearby shopping centre car park.

Police followed him and, when the officers got out of their car to approach the man, it’s alleged he continued driving, before hitting a parked car.

It’s further alleged the man then drove at the officers, who managed to jump out of the way. His vehicle then hit six more parked cars before stopping.

Police approached the vehicle and removed the driver; however, while placing him under arrest it’s alleged he struggled with the officers before assaulting them.

Further police arrived and once he was arrested, police searched the man and located a small amount of cannabis.

The 20-year-old was taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with multiple offences, including drive in manner dangerous; resist arrest; assault police; drive whilst suspended; and possess prohibited drug.

The Greenacre man was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 21 January 2021).

One of the officers suffered a facial injury but did not require treatment.
