NSW police charge man after officer assaulted at Tamworth

A man will face court tomorrow after allegedly assaulting an officer in the state’s western region yesterday.

About 10.45pm (Friday 10 December 2021), a man approached an off-duty police officer on Kable Avenue, Tamworth and allegedly began to verbally abuse him.

The man then allegedly pushed the officer – a Sergeant attached to Oxley Police District – before punching him in the face.

The officer was knocked unconscious, and a bystander attempted to assist before he was also allegedly pushed.

The man then fled the scene.

Following inquiries, about 12.30pm today (Saturday 11 December 2021), police arrested a 19-year-old man at an address on Calala Lane, Calala.

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm.

The man, from Manilla, was refused bail to appear in Tamworth Local Court tomorrow (Sunday 12 December 2021).

The officer received treatment for soreness and bruising to his jaw and neck, as well as a split lip.
