NSW police charge man after ride share driver assaulted

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a ride share driver in Surry Hills overnight.

About 7.50pm (Saturday 5 December 2020), a Toyota Camry being used as a ride share vehicle was stopped at traffic lights on Crown Street, when a 23-year-old man entered the vehicle without a booking and allegedly made threats towards the driver.

As the vehicle approached the intersection of Bourke and Short streets, the man allegedly started to punch the driver, a 31-year-old man, in the head.

Members of the public intervened and detained the man before contacting police.

Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command attended and arrested the man.

The Bossley Park man was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with aggravated detain for advantage, cause actual bodily harm and possess prohibited drug (x2).

The man was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail today (Sunday 6 December 2020).
