NSW police charge man with 18 x firearms and prohibited weapons offences

A man has been charged with multiple firearms and prohibited weapons offences in Sydney’s West.

About 9am yesterday (Wednesday 15 June 2022), police attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command located a man sitting in the passenger seat of a stationary vehicle in Cambridge Gardens. Police made inquiries and searched the man, locating a knife.

In a subsequent search of the vehicle, police located a loaded and shortened .22 calibre bolt action rifle, 170 rounds of ammunition, a .22 calibre pistol magazine, silencer, barrel, handcuffs, a corrective services badge, and two items suspected to be improvised explosive devices.

All items and the vehicle were seized for forensic examination. The suspected explosive devices have been sampled for testing and will be disposed of appropriately.

The 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to St Mary’s police station where he was charged with the following offences:

  • Possess loaded firearm public place
  • Possess shortened firearm without authority
  • Possess unregistered firearm – prohibited firearm
  • Not keep firearm safely – prohibited firearm
  • Possess a barrel without authority of licence/permit
  • 8 X Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority
  • Acquire pistol part without authority to do so
  • Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit
  • Have custody of an offensive implement in a public place
  • Acquired prohibited firearm part no authority to do so
  • Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen

The Cambridge Gardens man was refused bail to appear in Penrith Local Court today (Thursday 16 June 2022).
