NSW police charge two after investigation into serious assault at Wollongong

Two men have been charged after a man was hospitalised in a critical condition following an alleged assault in Wollongong at the weekend.

About 3.15am on Sunday (8 November 2020), police were called to Crown Street, near the intersection of Corrimal Street, after reports of a brawl.

Officers from Wollongong Police District attended and found a 36-year-old man lying unconscious on the ground, suffering serious head injuries. A second man, aged 34, was also assaulted, suffering facial injuries.

Both men were treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital where the older man remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police have been told two men were fighting when the injured man attempted to intervene and was reportedly punched in the head, falling to the ground unconscious.

Detectives commenced an investigation and following inquiries, a 22-year-old man was arrested at Lake Illawarra Police Station about 1.30pm on Sunday (8 November 2020).

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.

The Mount Warrigal man was granted conditional bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 22 December 2020.

Following further inquiries, a 30-year-old man was arrested at an Albion Park home about 4.15pm yesterday (Monday 9 November 2020).

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm

The Shellharbour man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 10 November 2020).

Investigations are continuing.
