NSW Police Force response to LECC inquiry into strip search practices

The NSW Police Force acknowledges the release of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission’s (LECC) review into strip searches released today (Tuesday 15 December 2020).

The NSW Police Force is committed to continuous improvement and has worked collaboratively with LECC over the past three years to review and refine our search procedures.

As acknowledged by LECC in its findings, the NSW Police Force has already made significant changes to policy documents, training requirements, and governance and review procedures.

This program of reform has already seen real change: since 2016, the percentage of strip searches conducted in the field resulting in a find has risen from 33% to 46%.

The findings are now being reviewed by the NSW Police Force executive, who will take a considered approach to further reform in this area.
