NSW police lay charges after Canley Heights siege

A man has been charged following a nine-hour stand-off with police in Sydney’s south-west.

The incident began about 9.45pm yesterday (Sunday 16 May 2021), when police were called to a home on Torrens Street, Canley Heights, after reports of a domestic-related incident.

Upon arrival, officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command and South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad spoke to a 36-year-old man before attempting to taser him.

Police will allege the man fired a shot at officers and a perimeter was established.

Specialist police, including negotiators and the Tactical Operations Unit, worked with officers from Fairfield City PAC to resolve the incident and, just after 6.30am today (Monday 17 May 2021), the man left the garage without incident and was arrested.

He was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with five offences,

Shoot at with intent to murder

Discharge firearm etc with intent to resist arrest

Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm

Possess unauthorised firearm

Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority.

The man, from Canley Heights, was refused bail to appear in Liverpool Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 18 May 2021).
