NSW police lay charges over carjacking after police car rammed at Lake Illawarra

A man will face court today charged over an alleged carjacking at Gerringong.

Just after 8am yesterday (Tuesday 25 June 2019), a Mitsubishi, allegedly involved in a carjacking at Gerringong on Monday (24 June 2019), was seen by police travelling north on Princes Highway at Broughton.

The Mitsubishi continued travelling along the Princes Highway whilst being monitored by officers attached to South Coast and Lake Illawarra Police Districts, with the assistance of Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, the Dog Unit and Polair.

After colliding with another vehicle, the Mitsubishi was driven to a property in Austral Park Road where they allegedly stole a silver Kia and continued driving towards the intersection of the Illawarra Highway and the M1, when it was forced to stop in heavy traffic.

Polair assisted and monitored the stolen car informing police of the location. Officers attempted to intercept the Kia while it was stationary in heavy traffic; however, the driver rammed another car out of the way. It is further alleged the driver rammed a police car and continued south on the M1.

The stolen Kia continued travelling on the M1 towards the intersection of Creamery Road where it has collided with three other cars, causing minor damage.

The occupants ran from the Kia and after a short foot pursuit, officers arrested a 24-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman.

Both were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The man was charged with 21 offences including:

– robbery-offensive weapon

– take and drive conveyance

– unlawful entry on enclosed lands

– possess prohibited drug

– steal motor vehicle

– use vehicle displaying misleading number plates

– carry cutting weapon

– drive speed dangerous

– drive manner dangerous

– police pursuit

– drive whilst disqualified

– use offensive weapon to prevent lawful apprehension

– drive stolen conveyance

– dishonestly obtain property by deception.

Police will allege in court; the man was also involved in a pursuit with police in Nowra on Tuesday 18 June 2019.

The woman was charged with three offences including carry in conveyance without consent and steal motor vehicle.

The man and woman were both refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 26 June 2019).
