NSW police seek help to find rock fisherman

A search is underway after a man was swept off rocks while fishing at Jervis Bay last night.

About 7pm (Tuesday 2 April 2019), a 58-year-old man was fishing off a rock shelf near Steamers Beach with two friends, when he was washed into the ocean.

The man’s friends notified emergency services and a large-scale search and rescue operation began; involving police from South Coast Police District and the Marine Area Command, assisted by the Royal Australian Navy, NSW Marine Rescue, Australian Federal Police, National Park Rangers and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra.

An air and sea search continued until 4.30am and resumed at first light.

Today’s search involves Marine Area Command, assisted by the Royal Australian Navy, NSW Marine Rescue, Australian Federal Police, National Park Rangers, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra. Police Divers from Sydney have also been deployed.

The man – who was not wearing a life jacket – is yet to be found.
